The Fontenay is a true five-star luxury hotel that also happens to be exceptionally welcoming to families. Set beside the beautiful Lake Alster, this modern, design-forward property feels calm, polished, and spacious, while still being very kid-friendly. It’s an ideal choice for families who want a refined hotel experience without feeling like kids are an afterthought.
The hotel itself delivers on both comfort and style. Family-friendly interconnecting rooms provide tons of space with a lovely terrace and leafy view, and thoughtful amenities like cribs, bottle warmers, baby baths, kids bathrobes, slippers, and children’s toiletries are available on request. Parents will love the stunning rooftop terrace overlooking the lake, and kids will love the indoor-outdoor rooftop pool (with pool noodles available for kids). The Fontenay also has one of the best hotel breakfasts we’ve had, featuring a fresh juicing station and an incredible granola bowl spread. The highlight is using the hotel’s brand new cargo e-bikes to get around Hamburg, which is one of the most bike-friendly cities we’ve been to. It made exploring with kids so easy and fun!
What truly sets The Fontenay apart is the service. When our daughter developed a sudden ear infection late at night, the hotel team stepped in immediately, running to a 24-hour pharmacy to pick up medicine, arranging a doctor’s appointment for first thing in the morning, and tracking down a pharmacy that carried her antibiotics. They even left small toys and thoughtful treats in the room to help our kids feel better. From warm blankets at dinner to genuine kindness toward tired little travellers, the staff consistently went above and beyond in ways that matter when travelling with kids.
